How to Use the AI Beer Recipe Generator: Step-by-Step Guide

Want to create your own beer recipe but not sure where to start? Our AI recipe generator creates a complete, brewable recipe in seconds — with grain bill, hop schedule, yeast, mash plan, and all specs. Here's how to get the most out of the generator, step by step.

Step 1: Enter Your Setup

Before choosing a beer style, enter your brewing setup. The AI needs this information to optimize your recipe for your equipment.

Choose Your Experience Level

You have three options:

  • Beginner: Simple recipes with a single mash rest (65-68°C / 149-154°F). Perfect if you're just starting out.

  • Intermediate: Recipes with 2-3 mash rests. You can choose fermentation temperature presets (fridge, cellar, room temperature).

  • Expert: Full control — 3+ rests, exact fermentation temperature via slider, optional pressure fermentation (spunding).
  • Your level affects recipe complexity. Beginners get simpler recipes, experts get full flexibility.

    Choose Your Equipment Type

    Select your brewing setup:

  • BIAB (Brew in a Bag): One pot, one bag — the simplest method. Brewhouse efficiency ~65-70%.

  • All-in-One: Grainfather, Braumeister, or similar complete systems. Efficiency ~70-75%.

  • Professional: 3-vessel system with separate mash, lauter, and boil. Efficiency ~75-80%.
  • The AI adjusts malt amounts and water volumes for your equipment.

    Optional Settings (Intermediate/Expert)

  • Fermentation temperature: Affects yeast selection. If you can only ferment at room temperature, the AI recommends tolerant yeasts.

  • Pressure fermentation: For experts with pressure-rated fermenters — enables clean fermentation at higher temperatures.

  • Water chemistry: If you've saved your water profile, the AI also considers water treatment.
  • Step 2: Choose a Beer Style

    Browse Categories

The 73 beer styles are organized in categories:

  • Ale: IPA, Pale Ale, Stout, Porter, Wheat Beer, Belgian styles...

  • Lager: Pilsner, Helles, Märzen, Bock, Schwarzbier...

  • Specialty: Sour, Smoked Beer, Fruit Beers, historical styles...
  • Click a category and select your desired style.

    Adjust Target Parameters

After selecting a style, you'll see sliders for:

  • IBU (Bitterness): Set how bitter your beer should be — within style guidelines

  • ABV (Alcohol): Stronger or lighter than the style average

  • EBC/SRM (Color): Lighter or darker

  • CO₂ (Carbonation): More or less carbonation
  • The sliders show you the typical ranges for your chosen style. You can adjust within these boundaries.

    Set Your Batch Size

Choose from quick buttons (10L, 20L, 25L, 30L) or enter a custom volume. The AI calculates all amounts exactly for your batch size.

Step 2b: Describe Your Flavor (The Secret Weapon!)

The "Flavor Profile" free text field is the most powerful feature of the generator. Give the AI additional context:

    Describe Flavor Preferences

  • • *"A hoppy IPA with citrus and tropical aromas"*

  • • *"Malty and full-bodied, low bitterness, light caramel notes"*

  • • *"Fresh, light, and summery — perfect for hot days"*
  • Mention Your Existing Ingredients

  • • *"I have Citra and Mosaic hops — please use those"*

  • • *"Please use Safale US-05 yeast, I have it on hand"*

  • • *"I have Pilsner malt and Crystal 40 — build the recipe around those"*
  • Use a Favorite Beer as Template

  • • *"Like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, but hoppier"*

  • • *"Similar to Guinness but lighter"*

  • • *"A wheat beer in the style of Schneider Weisse"*
  • The AI analyzes your text and adjusts the recipe accordingly. The more details you provide, the better the result.

    Step 3: Generate Your Recipe

Click "Create Recipe" and the AI calculates your recipe. After a few seconds you get:

    What the AI Delivers

  • Recipe name: A creative name for your beer

  • Description: What makes your beer special

  • Grain bill: All malts with percentages and calculated gram amounts

  • Hop schedule: Timings (bittering, flavor, aroma, whirlpool, dry hop) with amounts

  • Yeast: Recommendation with fermentation temperature and attenuation

  • Mash schedule: All rests with temperature and duration

  • Specs: OG, FG, ABV, IBU, EBC — all calculated
  • Not Happy?

Click "Edit & Regenerate" — you go back to step 2 and can adjust style, sliders, or flavor text. Then generate a new recipe.

Fine-Tuning: The Recipe Editor with Live Calculation

The generated recipe is a starting point. With the recipe editor, you can adjust every detail:

    What You Can Change

  • Malts: Add, remove, or change percentages

  • Hops: Adjust varieties, amounts, and addition times

  • Yeast: Choose a different yeast

  • Mash schedule: Change rests and temperatures

  • Extras: Add spices, sugars, fruits

  • Carbonation: Adjust CO₂ volume and sugar amount
  • Live Calculation in Real-Time

The special thing about the editor: Every change is calculated instantly. When you change a malt, you immediately see:

  • • How original gravity (OG) changes

  • • How ABV shifts

  • • How color (SRM/EBC) adjusts

  • • How the BU:GU ratio changes
  • Experiment with ingredients and see what happens in real-time — without brewing first.

    After: Brew, Document, Share

When your recipe is ready, you have many options:

  • Save recipe: To your personal recipe collection

  • Start brew day: With built-in timers for every step — mashing, boiling, hop additions

  • Shopping list: All ingredients at a glance, ready to order

  • Fermentation log: Track gravity and temperature throughout fermentation

  • Share: Share recipe via link or export as PDF

  • Community: Publish your recipe and get feedback from other brewers
